Alexion Pharmaceuticals is spending about $8.4 billion - a huge premium — to buy Synageva BioPharma, a fellow rare disease treatment developer with no products on the market that booked a first-quarter loss of nearly $60 million. That's more than double the value Synageva BioPharma Corp.'s closing price of $95.87 on Tuesday. Shares of the drugmaker are soaring in premarket trading.

While survey points to eurozone businesses in robust mood, figures show big retail sales drop

LONDON (AP) — Following a solid start to the year, signs emerged Wednesday that the 19-country eurozone economy is losing some traction. Financial information company Markit said its purchasing managers' index, a broad gauge of business activity, was 53.9 points in April. Though slightly lower than the near four-year high of 54.0 in March, it remained well above the 50-point threshold that separates growth from decline.

Sinclair posts 1Q profit, results beat Wall Street estimates

HUNT VALLEY, Md. (AP) _ Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. (SBGI) on Wednesday reported first-quarter net income of $24.3 million. On a per-share basis, the Hunt Valley, Maryland-based company said it had profit of 25 cents. The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 10 cents per share.

Alcobra posts 1st-quarter loss of $5.2 million

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) _ Alcobra Ltd. (ADHD) on Wednesday reported a first-quarter loss of $5.2 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier. The Tel Aviv, Israel-based company said it had a loss of 26 cents per share. Alcobra shares have increased 50 percent since the beginning of the year. The stock has dropped 67 percent in the last 12 months.
