NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge imposed a $1.3 billion civil penalty against Bank of America on Wednesday for its role in selling risky mortgages to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that were advertised as safe investments. A jury found in October 2013 that BofA was liable for Countrywide's role in selling risky loans to the government housing agencies through a program nicknamed the "Hustle" from August 2007 to May 2008. The jury found that Countrywide executives deliberately misrepresented the quality of mortgages being sold.

Fed slows bond buying further but provides no clear signal on timing of first rate hike

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve offered a mixed message on the U.S. economy Wednesday: Growth is strengthening, and the unemployment rate is steadily falling. Yet by some measures, the job market remains subpar. Instead, the Fed reiterated its plan to keep short-term rates low "for a considerable time" after ends its monthly bond purchases. The Fed said it will slow the pace of its purchases by another $10 billion to $25 billion a month. The purchases, which have been intended to keep long-term borrowing rates low, are set to end in October.

Portland, Oregon, City Council legalizes short-term rentals in homes, boosting Airbnb

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland City Council voted Wednesday to legalize short-term rentals in single-family homes, giving added legitimacy to rental websites such as Airbnb. Homeowners will be allowed to rent one or two bedrooms once a safety inspection is done and neighbors are notified. Mayor Charlie Hales and the city commissioners said they want Portland to be active in the "sharing economy." Later this year, they plan to discuss whether to also legalize short-term rentals in apartment buildings and condos.
