(AP) — A requirement that Yale undergraduates on financial aid pay up to $6,400 annually toward their education is coming under protest from students who argue it creates a divide along class lines and keeps them from participating more in campus life. The Ivy League university with a $23.9 billion endowment has some of the nation's most generous aid policies, including a promise that students can graduate without any loans, but some students say they have been advised to borrow money when they had trouble meeting the financial obligation.

FDA says maker of endoscope linked to 'superbug' outbreak in LA did not seek federal approval

WASHINGTON (AP) — The manufacturer of a medical instrument at the center of a recent "superbug" outbreak in Los Angeles did not receive federal clearance to sell the device, according to officials from the Food and Drug Administration. Despite the lack of clearance, the FDA said doctors should continue using the device because it's not clear that federal review would have prevented the recent infections reported in patients.

AbbVie will spend about $21 billion to buy fellow drugmaker Pharmacyclics in a bid to add another major revenue producer to a product portfolio that already includes the world's top-selling drug, the anti-inflammatory Humira. Imbruvica is approved in more than 40 countries and treats three different types of blood cancers including chronic lymphocytic leukemia, which is the most common leukemia in adults. The once-a-day capsule works by blocking a protein that allows the cancer to multiply and spread.

Construction of Tokyo's new Olympic stadium to start in October following demolition delays

TOKYO (AP) — Demolition of Tokyo's old National Stadium will be completed by September and construction of the new main stadium for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will start in October, the venue's management group said Thursday. The new 80,000-seat stadium is slated to host the opening and final of the Rugby World Cup in 2019.
