Greek pensioners take to streets ahead of expected cuts, budget vote

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — More than 2,000 pensioners chanting "We can't live on 300 euros" marched through central Athens Thursday to protest plans by the country's left-wing government to overhaul the pension system. Pension funds have been severely hit by a massive debt-restructuring deal in 2012, a fast aging population, and weak contributions due to high unemployment.

South African judge scraps moratorium on domestic trade in rhino horn, alarming activists

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A South African court on Thursday opened the way to allowing local trade in rhino horns, alarming some conservationists who warned the ruling leaves rhinos even more vulnerable to poachers who are slaughtering them in record numbers. The ruling by Judge Francis Legodi in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria stirred an often acrimonious debate between those who say legalization will spur poaching in South Africa, and rhino breeders and others who believe a regulated trade that allows the sale of horn stockpiles and the harvesting of horns from living rhinos will undercut poaching.

New Jersey transportation projects appear to slow as infrastructure fund faces uncertainty

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Drivers on New Jersey roads this holiday season might see fewer signs of state contracting work, and some in the industry say it's a result of a dwindling fund to pay for roads, bridges and other infrastructure. In the meantime, the Department of Transportation has given notice for fewer contract bids. The work includes concrete repair in northern and southern New Jersey, among other projects.

As Connecticut farm celebrates 275 years, owners seek new stewards in family's 9th generation

MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. (AP) — Through wars, financial panics and a freeze that destroyed its peach crop a century ago, eight generations of the Lyman family have sustained its farm in the hills of central Connecticut. "I think it's a little of 'to be determined,'" said John Lyman, executive vice president of Lyman Orchards. "Nothing lasts forever."
