Company to give $300,000 in back wages to disabled workers paid less than minimum wage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — An employment program agreed to give $300,000 in back wages to around 100 disabled workers for allegedly failing to pay overtime and the minimum wage, as part of a settlement announced Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Labor. Federal authorities said last year that the average wage for disabled workers at Training Thru Placement was $1.57 an hour, although one employee got 14 cents an hour. At the time, the company had authorization from the Department of Labor to pay disabled workers less than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour for work that included light assembling, sorting and packaging.

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Taxi drivers and Colombian users of Uber are butting heads over a government ban on the ride-sharing company. Taxi drivers around the world fearing a loss of business from Uber's credit card-only, spruced-up service have challenged the Delaware-based company on similar grounds.

NIH study: Ebola vaccine safe in first 20 people studied, triggers promising immune response

WASHINGTON (AP) — An experimental Ebola vaccine appears safe and triggered signs of immune protection in the first 20 volunteers to test it, U.S. researchers reported Wednesday. Some people also developed a different set of virus-fighting immune cells, named T cells, the study found. That may be important in fending off Ebola, as prior research found that monkeys protected by the vaccine also had that combination response.

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a fresh confrontation with Republicans, the Obama administration on Wednesday proposed stricter emissions limits on smog-forming pollution linked to asthma and respiratory illness. The move fulfilled a long-delayed campaign promise by President Barack Obama but left environmental and public health groups wanting more.
