Port of Savannah handled a record 3.6M cargo containers, buoyed by West Coast woes

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Buoyed in part by labor woes on the West Coast, the booming seaports in Savannah and Brunswick saw another fiscal year of record-smashing amounts of cargo moving across their docks, the Georgia Ports Authority reported Monday. The tonnage figure includes a whopping 3.6 million units of containerized cargo — giant metal boxes used to ship consumer goods from electronics to frozen chickens — that moved through the Port of Savannah. That means containerized imports and exports jumped 17 percent from last year, when Savannah surpassed 3 million container units for the first time.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Monday that the House will not consider the Senate version of a long-term, must-pass highway bill, setting up an apparent impasse as Congress faces a Friday deadline. The House has passed a five-month extension of transportation programs without the Export-Import Bank.

Covered California says average cost of health care insurance increasing about 4 percent

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California announced Monday that the cost of individual health plans will increase about 4 percent for the second straight year, saying its strategy to force insurers to compete on price and value is controlling costs for consumers. The average increase in Southern California is 1.8 percent, for a total of $296 a month, compared to 7 percent, or a total of $384 a month, in Northern California. Southern Californians can get better rates because the region has more provider competition.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — Federal and state officials say the beginning of construction for the nation's first offshore wind farm is the success the industry needs to surge forward in the United States.
