COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — L Brands Inc. (LB) on Wednesday reported fiscal second-quarter profit of $188.4 million. The Columbus, Ohio-based company said it had profit of 63 cents per share. The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 62 cents per share.

Hewlett-Packard matches fiscal 3rd-quarter earnings expectations, tops revenue forecasts

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) — Hewlett-Packard Co.'s (HPQ) fiscal third-quarter earnings fell 29 percent as the personal computer and printer maker absorbed the costs of employee layoffs and past acquisitions. The results announced Wednesday also included a slight revenue gain from the previous year. HP earned $985 million, or 52 cents per share, for the three months ended in July. That compared to income of $1.4 billion, or 71 cents per share, at the same time last year.

Feds say sheen from thousands of gallons of oil spilled into Ohio River dissipating

CINCINNATI (AP) — Federal officials say most of a reddish-brown sheen from thousands of gallons of fuel oil spilled into the Ohio River from a power plant has dissipated as cleanup estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars a day continues. A Duke Energy spokeswoman says the spill at the plant apparently resulted from human error. She says officials believe a valve was left open during a transfer of oil among tanks.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is considering key changes in the nation's immigration system requested by tech, industry and powerful interest groups, in a move that could blunt Republicans' election-year criticism of the president's go-it-alone approach to immigration. "The president has not made a decision regarding next steps, but he believes it's important to understand and consider the full range of perspectives on potential solutions," said White House spokesman Shawn Turner.
