NEW YORK (AP) — Facebook's first-quarter earnings and revenue grew sharply, surpassing Wall Street's expectations thanks to an 82 percent increase in advertising revenue. Facebook says its revenue was $2.5 billion, up 71 percent from $1.46 billion in the same period a year ago. Analysts expected adjusted earnings of 24 cents per share on revenue of $2.36 billion.

TORONTO (AP) — Canada said Wednesday it was phasing out the type of rail tankers involved in last summer's massive explosion of a runaway oil train that incinerated much of a town in Quebec, killing 47 people and prompting intense public pressure to make oil trains safer. Since then, trains carrying oil also have exploded and burned in Alabama, North Dakota and New Brunswick. Wednesday's announcement is of great interest in the U.S., as the rail industry is deeply integrated across North America and both nations' accident investigators implored their governments earlier this year to impose new safety rules.

MOSCOW (AP) — The founder of Russia's leading social media network — a wunderkind often described as Russia's Mark Zuckerberg — has left his post as CEO and fled the country as cronies of President Vladimir Putin have made steady inroads into the company's ownership. Although months in the making, the loss of Durov's leadership in VKontakte means that the space for free speech on the Russian web could shrink even further.
