LONDON (AP) — A botched cyberattack aimed at unmasking Syrian dissidents has experts worried that the Islamic State group is adding malicious software to its arsenal. Citizen Lab analyst John Scott-Railton said there is circumstantial evidence of the group's involvement, and cautioned that if the group has moved into cyberespionage, "the targets might not stop with the borders of Syria."

Oakland is second California city, after LA, to ban tool used by circus elephant handlers

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The circus will stop coming to Oakland in a few years after a tool used by elephant handlers was banned in the city. Oakland is now the second city in California, after Los Angeles, to ban the use of a bullhooks. Stephen Payne, a spokesman for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, says the ban takes effect in 2017. The Oakland Zoo and animal rights activists supported the ordinance.

US stocks climb as Oracle leads technology stocks higher; Oil falls after losing early gains

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose sharply Thursday, led gains in by technology stocks as Oracle surged following a strong earnings report. Energy stocks lagged the market as the price of crude oil resumed its slide. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 300 points, or 1.7 percent, to 17,657. The Nasdaq composite rose 86 points, or 1.9 percent, to 4,730.

5 companies that met with Gov. Chafee in Europe look to establish Rhode Island presence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Five companies that Gov. Lincoln Chafee met with while in Europe in April said Thursday that they are looking to establish operations in Rhode Island. The political leaders welcomed the businesses and offered their assistance. Raimondo said she will make sure the companies have access to streamlined regulations, skilled employees, modern infrastructure and great choices for office locations.
