NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are lower in midday trading on Wall Street as traders react to some disappointing earnings from U.S. companies. Laboratory Corporation of America plunged 10 percent Wednesday after cutting its full-year earnings forecast. Joy Global, a maker of mining equipment, sank 4 percent after reporting earnings that fell short analysts' forecasts.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Citing a potential threat to public health, the Food and Drug Administration moved Wednesday to phase out the widespread use of antibiotics in animals processed for meat. If the companies sign on, use of those antibiotics to promote growth in animals would be illegal and prescriptions would be required to use the drugs for animal illnesses.

PARIS (AP) — A U.S. charitable foundation said Wednesday that it was the anonymous bidder that paid $530,000 for 24 Native American masks in a contested Paris auction two days ago, and will return them to the Hopi and the San Carlos Apache tribes. He added: "They do not belong in auction houses or private collections."

NEW YORK (AP) — New York financier Bernard Madoff's former right-hand man summed up his boss' arrest exactly five years ago with two words: "Madoff Implodes." DiPascali says Madoff called him that morning to say the FBI was in the Manhattan office of Madoff's brother. DiPascali says he asked Madoff "why are you calling me?" and threw the phone across the room.
