NEW YORK (AP) — Investors got some bad news about the American shopper on Friday, driving down stocks and sending the Dow Jones industrial average to a loss for the week. "Visa put a lot of caution into the market this morning," said Quincy Krosby, a market strategist at Prudential Financial. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 123.23 points, or 0.7 percent, to 16,960.57. It's the first time the Dow has closed below the psychologically notable 17,000-point mark since July 9.

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Earthquakes jolted three different parts of Alaska on Friday. An unrelated magnitude-4.3 earthquake was felt in Kodiak. Alaska Earthquake Center seismologist Natasha Ruppert said it's somewhat unusual to have unrelated quakes strong enough to be felt in two parts of the state.

US plans widespread tests of ocean floor using sound blasting along East Coast

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The federal government is planning to use sound blasting to conduct research on the ocean floor along most of the East Coast, using technology similar to that which spawned a court battle between environmentalists and researchers in New Jersey this summer. "New Jersey's marine life, fisheries and coastal economy can't get a break," said Cindy Zipf, executive director of Clean Ocean Action, which led a thus-far unsuccessful battle to block a sound blasting research plan off the coast of New Jersey's Long Beach Island.
