US official: Auto safety agency under review after controversial recalls

WASHINGTON (AP) — A senior Obama administration official says the "safety culture" of the federal agency that oversees auto recalls is being reviewed. The official says a team is examining risk management and the safety posture in general at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The official also says that further action is possible involving air bag inflators made by Takata Corp. The inflators can rupture, ejecting shrapnel in a crash. Recalls have been limited to vehicles registered in regions with high humidity, but millions more could be affected if recalls are extended nationwide.

Founder of US halal food supplier charged with fraud over beef exports to Malaysia, Indonesia

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The founder of a popular line of food products for observant Muslims has been charged with fraudulently shipping beef to Malaysia and Indonesia that didn't meet the countries' import requirements, federal prosecutors in Iowa said Friday. His attorney, Haytham Faraj, called the 19-count indictment unfair, saying it was filed after his client rejected a plea agreement. Aossey, a prominent 73-year-old Cedar Rapids businessman, hasn't been arrested and is expected to soon make an initial court appearance, Faraj said.

CHICAGO (AP) — Grain futures were lower Friday on the Chicago Board of Trade. Wheat for Dec delivery lost 9 cents to $5.1775 a bushel; Dec corn was 6.75 cents lower at 3.53 a bushel; Dec oats fell 8.75 cents to $3.5175 a bushel; while Nov soybeans declined 15.75 cents to $9.7750 a bushel. Beef was lower and pork was higher on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Striking workers head to Colby College to pressure hedge fund that owns FairPoint stock

WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) — A group of striking FairPoint workers is picketing a meeting of Colby College's trustees, saying one of them has the power to force the telephone company to return to the bargaining table. Angelo Gordon is FairPoint's largest single shareholder. The unions have been asking hedge fund managers that own half of the company's stock to press the company to return to the negotiating table.
