XIXI, Taiwan (AP) — Firefighters uncovered ID cards and body fragments as they picked through wreckage Thursday for evidence to identify the victims of a plane crash that killed 48 people on a Taiwanese island. The plane operated by Taiwan's TransAsia Airways was carrying 58 passengers when it crashed while trying to land in the scenic Penghu archipelago in the Taiwan Strait between Taiwan and China.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Texas and nationwide retail gasoline prices have slipped 4 cents this week amid lower crude oil costs. AAA Texas on Thursday reported the average price at the pump statewide settled at $3.41 per gallon. Motorists across the U.S. are paying an average $3.55 per gallon. The association survey found Amarillo has the cheapest gasoline in Texas this week at $3.32 per gallon. Drivers in El Paso have the most expensive gasoline in Texas at $3.49 per gallon.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi merchants and shoppers are gearing up for the fifth annual back-to-school sales tax holiday. Mississippi's sales tax holiday starts Friday at 12:01 a.m. and ends Saturday at midnight. For retailers, it is one of their busiest times of the year. As in previous years, shoppers can save 7 percent on certain clothes and shoes that cost $100 or less per item. While individual items can't cost more than $100 each to qualify for the tax break, shoppers have no limits on how much they can spend

Governor calls for budget cuts as Vermont sees revenue forecast downgrade

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont's revenues are not growing as fast as expected, and Gov. Peter Shumlin says he's asking state agency chiefs to recommend a round of budget cuts. The governor says the state's general fund revenues now are expected to grow by about 3 percent during this fiscal year, versus the 4.8 percent growth that had been forecast earlier.
