EPA rejects New York Gov. Cuomo's loan plan for Tappan Zee Bridge; state will appeal

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday balked at Gov. Andrew Cuomo's proposal to use half a billion dollars in federal clean water loans to help finance the cost of the new Tappan Zee Bridge, instead approving only $29 million. The Democratic governor hoped to use $511 million in low-cost federal clean water loans for the bridge. But in a letter dated Tuesday, the federal agency said it wouldn't authorize $482 million that Cuomo had sought to cover river dredging, the removal of the old span and other aspects of the work.

Child abuse charge puts previously popular Adrian Peterson at center of criticism

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — For as long as he's been in the NFL, Adrian Peterson has been one of the most popular and most marketable stars in the league, an approachable superstar with the kind of inspirational comeback story that made him an endorser's dream. In the wake of the Vikings' decision to allow Peterson to play while the legal process plays out in Texas, the Radisson hotel chain has suspended its relationship with the Vikings, Nike stores in the Twin Cities have stopped selling merchandise with his name on it and a message on his All Day Foundation's website says the children's charity is on hiatus and "will reengage after Adrian, his family, and staff have reflected on how the current situation impacts the direction for Adrian's philanthropy."

Major sponsors join chorus of disapproval over NFL but stop short of pulling ads

Major sponsors including Anheuser-Busch are adding to the chorus of disapproval over the National Football League's recent scandals, but the companies are stopping short of pulling advertising. McDonald's, Visa and Campbell Soup Co. say they have also voiced similar concerns to the league. The statements come after Radisson hotels said Monday that it was pulling its sponsorship of the Minnesota Vikings. No other brands have pulled sponsorships from teams or the NFL.

EPA rejects New York Gov. Cuomo's loan plan for Tappan Zee Bridge; state will appeal

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo plans to appeal a decision by federal regulators to reject his plan to use clean water funds to help finance the new Tappan Zee Bridge. The administration says the loans would reduce the bridge's $3.9 billion cost while helping to mitigate its environmental impact. Cuomo says the EPA decision won't affect the replacement project.
