US judge OKs $338 million settlement for victims of oil train disaster that killed 47

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A U.S. bankruptcy judge has approved a $338 million settlement fund for victims of a fiery oil train derailment that claimed 47 lives in Quebec. The settlement, which is worth $446 million in Canadian dollars, was the product of negotiations with about two dozen companies. A runaway train with 72 oil tankers derailed on July 6, 2013, in Lac Megantic, Quebec, setting off powerful explosions and causing raging fires.

Federal Reserve official says rate hike in either October or December likely to be appropriate

NEW YORK (AP) — A voting member of the Federal Reserve's policy committee says he believes the economy is on a satisfactory track and an increase in interest rates is likely to be appropriate in either October or December. In remarks prepared for a conference of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, Lockhart says he will be watching in particular consumer activity in making his decision on whether to raise rates at one of the Fed's two final meetings of 2015.

Officials to announce cause of February's fiery oil train derailment in southern West Virginia

MONTGOMERY, W.Va. (AP) — The Federal Railroad Administration is set to announce what caused a fiery oil train derailment in southern West Virginia in February. The agency has scheduled a news conference for Friday morning at BridgeValley Community and Technical College in Montgomery. A CSX train carrying 3 million gallons of Bakken crude oil derailed in the town of Mount Carbon next to the Kanawha River during a Feb. 16 snowstorm. Twenty-seven of the train's 109 cars derailed. Twenty cars leaked crude oil.
