The Latest: Black Friday gets started on Thursday night

Shoppers had a bit of a buying appetizer on Thanksgiving, but the question remains whether they'll feast on deals on the day after the holiday. Big chains that include Macy's, J.C. Penney, Wal-Mart and Target opened their doors on the holiday for those who wanted to get their post-turkey shop on. But the day after Thanksgiving, called Black Friday, is typically the biggest shopping day of the year. And for a decade, it had been considered the official start of the holiday buying season.

BEIJING (AP) — China's main stock market index fell more than 5 percent after two of the country's biggest securities firms announced they are under investigation for possible misconduct. A growing string of Chinese securities executives have been detained or questioned by regulators following a plunge in share prices that began in early June.

Holiday shoppers get a head start on Thanksgiving

NEW YORK (AP) — Black Friday used to kick off the holiday shopping season, but now Thanksgiving Day is the new tradition for some shoppers. And at the 24-hour Wal-Mart store in Naperville, Illinois, the aisles were clogged with people and carts by 6 p.m., when employees began pulling shrink wrap off palettes of merchandise to mark the official start of Black Friday deals.

Japan's jobless rate drops to 20-year low, but consumer spending drops as wages stagnate

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's jobless rate fell to a 20-year low in October, but consumer spending and incomes also edged down as the tight labor market failed to spur significant increases in wages. So far, short-handed employers have resorted to use of overtime and hiring more temporary workers, seeking to avoid increases in base wages that would be difficult to reverse if the economy takes a turn for the worse.
