On Friday: The Dow rose 195.10 points, or 1.1 percent, to 17,390.52. The S&P 500 rose 23.40 points, or 1.2 percent, to 2,018.05.

NEW YORK (AP) — For stock investors, there was no shortage of drama in October. All told, U.S. stocks ended October solidly higher, up 2.3 percent. The Dow Jones industrial average capped the rally by rising 195.10 points, or 1.1 percent, to end at 17,390.52 on Friday. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 23.40 points, or 1.2 percent, to 2,018.05 and the Nasdaq composite added 64.60 points, or 1.4 percent, to 4,630.74.

(AP) — A Virgin Galactic space tourism rocket exploded Friday during a test flight, killing a pilot aboard and seriously injuring another while scattering wreckage in Southern California's Mojave Desert, witnesses and officials said. "During the test, the vehicle suffered a serious anomaly resulting in the loss of SpaceShipTwo," Virgin Galactic tweeted.

(AP) — British billionaire Richard Branson is headed to California's Mojave Desert after a Virgin Galactic space tourism rocket exploded and crashed, killing one person and seriously injuring another. Officials and witnesses say Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo exploded Friday after taking off on a test flight. No other details were immediately available.
