Honda records 20 pct rise in profit on cheap yen despite costs of massive air bag recalls

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese automaker Honda reported Friday a 20 percent jump in fiscal first quarter profit on the back of a cheap yen that offset the damage from a massive air bag recall. Quarterly sales gained nearly 16 percent to 3.7 trillion yen ($29.9 billion). The Tokyo-based maker of the Accord sedan and Odyssey minivan has been the hardest hit among automakers from the costs related to a global recall of Takata Corp.'s air bags that can explode.

Bailout talks to shift gear after Greece's Tsipras prevails over anti-euro rebels

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Lead negotiators from the European Union and International Monetary Fund began an intensive round of talks with Greece on Friday to hammer out details of a third international bailout worth some 85 billion euros ($93 billion). The bailout talks must be concluded before Aug. 20, when a debt repayment to the European Central Bank worth more than 3 billion euros is due.

Clinton, in Rubio's and Bush's back yard, will call for lifting Cuba embargo

MIAMI (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton on Friday will call on Congress to end the trade embargo the U.S. has imposed against Cuba since 1962. Perhaps more importantly, it draws a sharp contrast with two top Republican presidential contenders from Florida, Sen. Marco Rubio and former Gov. Jeb Bush, at a time when younger Cuban-American voters in Florida are softening their stance on the matter. The Republican-led Congress is unlikely to allow such a change in U.S.-Cuba relations anytime soon.

Officials examining washed-up wing part hope to give Flight 370 families some answers soon

SAINT-ANDRE, Reunion (AP) — After 16 agonizing months without answers, loved ones of those on board Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 will likely have to wait at least another day for confirmation that it crashed into the sea, as investigators work to identify the source of a barnacle-encrusted wing part that washed up on a remote Indian Ocean island.
