Internet service startup receives $100K Iowa award

An eastern Iowa startup that tries to help businesses find cheaper Internet service has been awarded $100,000 in state assistance to help develop the company. The Iowa City Area Development Group said Wednesday that the Bandwidth Pool was awarded aid from the Iowa Demonstration Fund last week. The Bandwidth Pool allows businesses who are looking for internet providers to receive competitive bids and reviews to help them decide. The company says those that spend $500 per month stand to benefit the most, and early users have reported saving up to 20 percent.
Mich. lawmaker seeks to make small business office

A Michigan lawmaker wants to create a new state office with the goal of helping small businesses get started and thrive. It would coordinate programs for small businesses, connect owners to resources and create a database of business groups and government entities that govern business. Lamonte says in a statement that "the global economy is changing, making entrepreneurship more viable and important than ever." She says it makes sense to "help those people who are trying to create new businesses, jobs, and opportunity in Michigan."
AAA: Low SC gas prices mean busy Memorial Day

Low gas prices are expected to mean more driving for South Carolinians over the Memorial Day weekend. AAA Carolinas says it estimates that more than 443,000 South Carolina motorists will hit the road this weekend. That's 1.5 percent more than last year's holiday. AAA says South Carolina's average gas price is $3.24 a gallon, the lowest in the country. That's also 10 cents per gallon less than a year ago.
Bloomin' Brands prices secondary offering

Bloomin' Brands Inc., the parent company of Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba's Italian Grill and Bonefish Grill, on Thursday priced its secondary offering of 19 million shares of its stock at $21.50 per share. Bloomin' Brands, based in Tampa, Fla., said the offering is expected to close May 29. Underwriters have the option to buy up to 2.85 million additional shares to cover overallotments.
