5: 50 p.m. (1650GMT, 12:50 p.m. EDT) The local government in Duesseldorf says the most recent regular security check on the Germanwings co-pilot, conducted Jan. 27, found nothing unusual. It says it has also checked with authorities in Bremen, where he went to flight school, and Rhineland-Palatinate state, where his hometown is, and turned up nothing from there. It says previous security checks in 2008 and 2010 also showed no issues.

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — The city of Joplin has sued a Texas-based company that it hired to help in recovery efforts from the devastating 2011 tornado, accusing it of fraud and seeking at least $1.5 million in damages. The city hired the company, of Sugar Land, Texas, in 2012 to oversee plans to rebuild after the tornado damaged thousands of buildings and killed 161 people. The city learned in January that the company had closed, and that its owners — David Wallace and Costa Bajjali — had resigned.

NEW YORK (AP) — New phones from Samsung and HTC will be available in U.S. stores starting April 10. Phone sizes won't change. HTC is largely keeping the same design, but improving the camera and personalizing the home screen based on your location. It also promises to replace the phone once if you smash or crack it. Samsung is swapping its plastic back cover for more stylish metal and glass to better compete with the iPhone. It also improved the camera and software interface.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Authorities say a child has died after being struck by a public transit bus in Rhode Island less than half a mile from the Statehouse. The girl died from her injuries at a hospital. Her name and age were not released. RIPTA spokeswoman Barbara Polichetti says the agency is cooperating with police.
