US consumer sentiment picks up slightly, driven by income and wealth gains among top earners

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. consumer sentiment ticked up in August, driven by greater optimism about jobs, rising incomes, and increasing wealth. The increase largely occurred among higher-income groups. Consumers have sent mixed signals in recent months. The Michigan index has fluctuated between 80 and 82.5 since December. A measure of consumer confidence by the Conference Board rose this month to nearly a seven-year high. And yet Americans cut back their spending in July.

Firm predicts business from 3 closing casinos will go to other Atlantic City casinos

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — A Wall Street firm predicts much of the revenue generated by three Atlantic City casinos that are closing will remain in the city after they're gone. The firm also predicts in a report Friday that a good chunk of the money being won by the Showboat, Revel and Trump Plaza will go to the surviving Atlantic City casinos. Showboat and Revel are closing this weekend; Trump Plaza shuts down Sept. 16. After that, Atlantic City will have eight casinos after starting the year with 12.

Prost! Beer gardens, alcohol in parks helping strapped budgets in Milwaukee, elsewhere

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Oversized mugs of beer clink together as drinkers sitting under a canopy of trees in a Milwaukee public park listen to live accordion music and proclaim "Prost!" — the German equivalent of "cheers." But traditional beer gardens are back in Milwaukee County, as some parks departments nationwide are starting to embrace once-banned alcohol to shore up their budgets. And regulars at the Estabrook Park Beer Garden in Milwaukee love that they can bring their picnic baskets of snacks to the lines of tables along the Milwaukee River and enjoy drinks in the short-lived warm summer air.

EU foreign ministers seek new sanctions against Russia for its actions in Ukraine

MILAN (AP) — Several European Union foreign ministers on Friday accused Russia of invading eastern Ukraine and said Moscow should be punished with more sanctions. "We have to be aware of what we are facing: We are now in the midst of the second Russian invasion of Ukraine within a year," said Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, referring to Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in March.
