LONDON (AP) — Bank of England policymakers are signaling that interest rates are likely to go up only gradually — though debate on the matter seems to be getting hotter. Policymakers opted to leave interest rates at a record low 0.5 percent and refrain from pumping more money into the economy. Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit, says policymakers are "becoming increasingly torn" but that unless the rate of economic growth weakens substantially in coming months, he'd expect to see them try "to talk up the likelihood of a first rate hike in November."

GIGLIO ISLAND, Italy (AP) — The Costa Concordia cruise liner began its final voyage Wednesday, slowly being towed away from the tiny Italian island where it capsized more than two years ago, killing 32 people. The tugs are bringing the crippled ship on a four-day journey to the northwestern port of Genoa, which is home to the ship's owner, Costa Crociere Spa. The vessel will be scrapped there.

BEIJING (AP) — Five employees of a company accused of selling expired beef and chicken to McDonald's, KFC and other restaurants in China were detained by police Wednesday after an official said illegal activity was an organized effort by the supplier. Some of the illegal conduct was an "arrangement organized by the company," the deputy director of the agency's Shanghai bureau, Gu Zhenghua, told the official Xinhua News Agency.
