Analog Devices net rises; outlook comes up short
5 hours ago
Chipmaker Analog Devices Inc.'s fiscal second-quarter net income edged higher on a tax benefit and rising sales in its automotive unit. Its outlook for the current period came in short of analyst estimates, however. Analog's stock fell 94 cents, or 2 percent, to $45.62 in after-hours trading. Analog Devices said Tuesday that it earned $164.5 million in the quarter that ended May 4, up 1 percent from $162.9 million in the same period last year. On a per-share basis, earnings slipped to 52 cents from 53 cents, because the company had more shares outstanding in this year's quarter.
Stocks gain on reassurance from a top Fed official

Reassuring comments from a Federal Reserve official and better earnings from two big retailers helped push the stock market higher Tuesday. "Those words were a salve for investors' nerves," said Lawrence Creatura, a fund manager at Federated Investors. Other Fed officials have recently talked about scaling back the program. "There's a lot of uncertainty surrounding this issue. And uncertainty and investors aren't always a happy match."
