Utah approves winery in town largely controlled by polygamous sect, whose members often drink

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A town on the Utah-Arizona border largely controlled by Warren Jeffs' polygamous sect moved closer to opening its first commercial winery, a new venture and a signal of yet another lifestyle choice that separates the sect from mainstream Mormon teachings. Abe Kader, a state inspector, said three of the five owners are from Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona. The twin border towns are populated largely by members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a radical offshoot of mainstream Mormonism whose members believe polygamy brings exaltation in heaven. The mainstream church strictly prohibits the practice.

FedEx suffers setback in lawsuit over classification of ground-division drivers in California

DALLAS (AP) — A federal court has ruled that FedEx Corp. improperly classified about 2,300 drivers in California as independent contractors instead of employees. A lawyer for the drivers estimated that they could receive at least $250 million in back pay and damages if the ruling stands up. The judges said that under California law, the drivers were employees because FedEx controlled how they did their work. They had to wear company uniforms, drive approved trucks, and follow other company procedures.

Williams-Sonoma's shares fall on weak profit outlook

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Shares of Williams-Sonoma Inc. tumbled late Wednesday, after the seller of cookware and home furnishings issued a weak profit outlook. The guidance came as Williams-Sonoma reported a 5 percent increase in fiscal second-quarter profits. The company said it earned net income of $50.7 million, or 53 cents per share, for the quarter. That compares with $48.9 million, or 49 cents per share, in the year-ago period.

3 years after Irene, new Vermont office complex rising on site of flooded buildings

WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) — Three years after flooding from Tropical Storm Irene made most of the state office complex in Waterbury unusable, its replacement is rising out of what was a sodden mess that reeked of the nearby Winooski River. The $125 million project, the largest state building project in Vermont history, is on track for completion at the end of 2015, when the first of 800 Agency of Human Services employees who will work there are scheduled to move in. It will take about four months to move everyone in, state project manager Mike Stevens said.
