Panel says Metro-North Railroad sacrificed safety for on-time performance

NEW YORK (AP) — The Metro-North Railroad has sacrificed safety for on-time performance, according to a report released Wednesday by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority panel. The MTA panel examined safety and maintenance practices at Metro-North, the Long Island Rail Road and the city's subway system. It found that the "safety culture" at the LIRR and the subway system "appears to be performing fairly well."

Opposition labor strike disrupts Argentine capital in protest of taxes, inflation

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — A labor organization opposed to Argentine President Cristina Fernandez caused traffic jams and disrupted life for many in the capital Wednesday at the start of a 36-hour strike. Many local government offices in Buenos Aires and nearby cities were closed Wednesday as a result of the strike.

Wheat rose, corn unchanged, oats and soybeans fell, on the CBOT; beef lower and pork higher on the CME.

CHICAGO (AP) — Grain futures were mostly lower Wednesday on the Chicago Board of Trade. Wheat for Dec delivery rose 5.75 cents to $5.6225 a bushel; Dec corn was unchanged at 3.65 a bushel; Dec oats were down 3.75 cents to $3.41 a bushel; while Nov soybeans fe11 4.25 cents to $10.2375 a bushel. Beef was lower and pork was higher on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
