Biotech drugmaker Amgen laying off 2,400-2,900, closing 4 sites, mainly to fund drug launches

Biologic drugmaker Amgen said Tuesday that it will lay off 12 percent to 15 percent of its worldwide workforce and close four sites, even as it reported very strong second-quarter results that trounced Wall Street expectations. The layoffs will happen this year and next, eliminating 2,400 to 2,900 jobs, mostly in the U.S. Amgen also plans to close two sites in Colorado, primarily manufacturing plants, and two in Washington state that focus on research and development.

AP PHOTOS: Oil fuels building boom in once desolate North Dakota oil patch

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — President Theodore Roosevelt once came to North Dakota's Badlands to find solitude and solace amid the area's "desolate, grim beauty." But Roosevelt's Dakota is barely visible today. The epicenter is a 45-mile stretch of U.S. Route 85 between the towns of Williston and Watford City. Once a sleepy two-lane road across the lonely prairie, it's being transformed into a four-lane highway with bypasses cutting around towns. In the spring and summer, oil patch roadwork slows traffic to a trickle akin to a major metropolis' rush hour.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Three reporters for a food safety publication have been subpoenaed in the $1.2 billion defamation lawsuit against ABC related to the network's coverage of a meat product derided as "pink slime." Attorney Bruce Johnson said Tuesday that the subpoenas were "overreaching" and that the publication would fight the requests.

US, European Union order tough new economic sanctions on Russia over Ukraine

WASHINGTON (AP) — Spurred to action by the downing of the Malaysian airliner, the European Union approved dramatically tougher economic sanctions Tuesday against Russia, followed swiftly by a new round of U.S. penalties targeting key sectors of the Russian economy. "Today Russia is once again isolating itself from the international community, setting back decades of genuine progress," Obama said. "It does not have to be this way. This a choice Russia and President Putin has made."
