NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose sharply Wednesday afternoon after the Federal Reserved said the U.S. economy was improving and that it would be "patient" in determining when to raise rates. Energy stocks jumped after the price of oil recovered some of its recent losses. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 34 points, or 1.8 percent, to 2,007. The Nasdaq composite climbed 71 points, or 1.5 percent, to 4,617.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Dow Jones industrial average surged as much as 300 points after the Federal Reserve signaled it was edging closer to raising interest rates because of a strengthening U.S. economy, but promised to be "patient" in its approach. The Dow was up 255 points, or 1.5 percent, to 17,324 as of 2:22 p.m. Eastern time Thursday. It rose as much as 303 points shortly after the announcement.

Medical marijuana research projects getting state funding in Colorado

DENVER (AP) — Colorado is awarding more than $8 million for medical marijuana research. Researchers say it the first time government money will be used to explore marijuana's medical potential. The grants awarded by the state Board of Health on Wednesday will go to studies on whether marijuana helps treat epilepsy, brain tumors, Parkinson's disease and post-traumatic stress disorder. Some of the studies still need federal approval.

US Fed slashes inflation forecast for 2015; sees stronger growth this year

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve has sharply cut its forecast for inflation next year, saying it will remain far below its 2 percent target through 2015. Policymakers also boosted their forecasts for economic growth this year to as much as 2.4 percent, up from a previous estimate of 2 percent to 2.2 percent. That reflects strong growth of 4.3 percent from April through September, the healthiest pace in a decade.
