US newspaper industry revenue fell 2.6 pct in 2013, hurt by drop in print ad revenue

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. newspaper industry revenue continued to fall last year, as increases in circulation revenue failed to offset shrinking demand for print advertising. The Newspaper Association of America says the industry's revenue fell 2.6 percent to $37.59 billion in 2013. Revenue from print advertising dropped 8.6 percent to $17.3 billion, while circulation revenue rose 3.7 percent to $10.87 billion.

NEW YORK (AP) — A portrait of a Pakistani teenager shot by the Taliban for championing education for girls will be auctioned next month. The oil painting by Jonathan Yeo shows Malala Yousafzai (mah-LAH'-lah YOO'-suhf-zeye) doing her homework. It is being donated by the artist to benefit the Malala Fund, which campaigns for girls' education.

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — A powerful magnitude-7.2 earthquake shook central and southern Mexico on Friday, sending panicked people into the streets. Some walls cracked and fell, but there were no reports of major damage or casualties. It was felt across at least a half-dozen states and Mexico's capital, where it collapsed several walls and left larges cracks in some facades. Debris covered sidewalks around the city.

Nevada jobless rate unchanged in March; remains 8.5 percent

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada's jobless rate held steady in March at 8.5 percent, the same as the month before, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported Friday. The state saw a seasonally adjusted gain of 4,700 jobs in March, as private employers added 5,100 jobs while 400 were cut from the public sector.
