LinkedIn stock bucks week's downward trend among social media companies after solid results

2 hours, 4 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — It hasn't been a great week for social media companies, but professional networking service LinkedIn Corp. seems to be bucking the trend. Its stock increased after the results came out. Net loss was $67.7 million, or 53 cents per share, which is wider than last year's loss of $1 million, or 1 cent per share. The company had warned in April that earnings would be dampened by costs related to its purchase of Lynda.com, an online learning company. It closed that deal in the second quarter. On Thursday, CEO Jeff Weiner said the deal "could be one of LinkedIn's most transformational initiatives as it has the potential to improve the member experience across the platform."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Pregnant women are calling up the mayor, concerned they won't be able to get to the delivery room. Some businesses say they've been told to close for a three-day weekend. Others are bringing in cots for workers to sleep. Taxi drivers, fearing onerous checkpoints and distant drop-off locations, are planning to stay home.

US economy delivers solid Q2 growth, rising inflation as Fed moves toward rate hike

2 hours, 4 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy isn't moving at warp speed, but it looks like it will be strong enough to handle an expected interest rate increase later this year. The economy's total output of goods and services rebounded to a respectable annual rate of 2.3 percent in the April-June quarter, the best showing since last summer. Moreover, the first quarter managed to grow a slight 0.6 percent, reversing an earlier government estimate of a contraction.

Wheel ignites on Spirit Airlines jet landing at Dallas-Fort Worth airport; no injuries

2 hours, 4 minutes ago

GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) — No injuries were reported after a landing gear on a Spirit Airlines jet caught fire while landing at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Mendez says the Airbus A-320 had 178 passengers on board. The fire was the second incident to involve a flight arriving at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport on Thursday. An American Airlines flight returned there shortly after takeoff about noon Thursday after smoke appeared in the cabin. Three passengers were injured slightly when the plane was evacuated using emergency slides.
