2 sides remain 'far apart' nearly 6 months after West Coast dockworkers' contract expired

2 hours, 45 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — West Coast dockworkers and their employers don't appear to be close to agreeing on a new contract, nearly six months after their old deal expired. The two sides are meeting Thursday in San Francisco. The Pacific Maritime Association represents oceangoing shipping lines and the operators of cargo terminals at the ports that employ longshoremen. A spokesman for the association says the two sides "remain far apart on several issues."

New York Fashion Week booted from Lincoln Center in court spat over public access to park land

2 hours, 47 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — C'est la vie, fashionistas. The city of New York and Lincoln Center is evicting the invitation-only, twice-yearly Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in a court spat over destroyed trees and displaced park benches. The groups argued the insular nature of the fashion shows that draw top designers and hundreds of buyers, editors and journalists violate laws governing public use of the land. Each February and September, the stiletto-heeled hordes cram the Lincoln Center complex for eight days of runway shows and presentations held in a large temporary tent.

US stocks surge for a second day after Fed's rate pledge; Dow soars more than 400 points

2 hours, 59 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — The Dow Jones industrial average had its biggest surge in three years Thursday, its second straight triple-digit gain following the Federal Reserve's reassurance that it was in no hurry to raise interest rates. Fed Chair Janet Yellen said Wednesday that she foresaw no rate hike in the first quarter of 2015. The comments eased concerns that policymakers would start raising interest rates at a time when growth outside the U.S. appears to be flagging. They also helped investors look past worries about the impact of a slumping oil price and turmoil in Russia, where the currency has slumped.

VH1 stands by 'Sorority Sisters,' labeled offensive by critics; some sponsors drop the show

LOS ANGELES (AP) — VH1 says it's sticking with "Sorority Sisters" despite criticism of the reality show's depiction of black sorority members and the loss of some sponsors. T-Mobile is among the latest sponsors to refuse to advertise on "Sorority Sisters." In a statement Thursday, the company says the program's content does not meet its guidelines.
