WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's new environment minister says he is against further cuts in carbon gas emissions, a topic to be discussed during climate talks next week in Paris. He said he wants to use the talks as a tool for "mitigating the negative effects of climate package for Poland." He did not specify how.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazilian police Wednesday arrested the government's leader in the Senate for allegedly obstructing the investigation into a corruption scandal at state-owned oil company Petrobras. Under Brazilian law, the Supreme Court must approve any investigation of legislators or top officials in the executive branch. Any criminal charges or trials of such figures must also must be approved and judged by the top court.

SEATTLE (AP) — The strain of E. coli linked to Costco chicken salad that sickened 19 people in seven states is more likely to be life-threatening than a recent outbreak that closed some Chipotle restaurants in the Northwest. The strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli can be life-threatening, but no deaths have been reported. Five people have been hospitalized and two have developed a type of kidney failure, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are drifting higher Wednesday morning, building on their small gains from the previous day, as markets start to wind down ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. PLOWING ALONG: Agricultural equipment maker Deere dealt with plunging sales of tractors, bulldozers and other equipment by slashing costs. The company's fiscal fourth-quarter results and its projections for the current fiscal year were better than analysts expected. Deere rose $1.59, or 2.1 percent, to $77.93.
