At Thursday's board meeting, commissioners will consider whether to authorize $40 million for planning for a new rail system and $30 million for architectural and engineering services to support the planning effort.

FDA says Medtronic must stop most sales of Synchromed drug pumps after years of problems

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration says Medtronic must stop most sales of its implantable drug pumps after years of uncorrected problems. Among other defects, some Synchromed pumps had to be recalled because they could lose battery power and fail, endangering patients. In other cases, the devices could cause patients to receive too much or too little medication.

Crane misses 1Q earnings and revenue expectations

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Crane Co. (CR) on Monday reported first-quarter profit of $51.1 million. The Stamford, Connecticut-based company said it had profit of 87 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs and costs related to mergers and acquisitions, came to 92 cents per share. The results did not meet Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.01 per share.

Businesses, schools partner on maritime job skills, seek support

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — In coastal communities throughout Alaska, several organizations are working together to prepare more Alaskans for jobs in the maritime industry. Aggie Fouts, the group's coordinator, says the group focused much of its effort this spring on getting legislative support for the plan. A resolution introduced in by Rep. Louise Stutes supporting the plan passed the House.
