WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy was growing at a moderate pace through mid-February despite severe winter storms that had disrupted activity in some regions, the Federal Reserve reported Wednesday. Uber buys digital mapping service deCarta, lessening dependence on tools from Google, Apple

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Uber Technologies is buying digital mapping specialist deCarta in a deal that may help the rapidly growing ride-hailing service lessen its dependence on navigation services from Google and Apple, an imposing pair of potential rivals. The deCarta deal comes a month after an unconfirmed report that Google Inc. is planning a rival ride-hailing service that would draw upon the driverless cars that the company has been building and testing for the past few years. Uber fueled further speculation about a looming battle with Google by forging a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University to work on its own driverless cars.

DENVER (AP) — IBM has purchased a small Denver startup as part of its effort to improve its Watson cognitive computing system. The technology giant announced the acquisition of AlchemyAPI on Wednesday but didn't release terms of the deal. It comes as IBM is shifting away from hardware to focus on business analytics, cloud computing and mobile services. Last year the company invested more than $1 billion in Watson, best known for beating human contestants on "Jeopardy!". That included $100 million for venture investments.
