NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose sharply Thursday, led gains in by technology stocks after Oracle surged following a strong earnings report. Energy stocks lagged the market as the price of crude oil resumed its slide. EARNINGS BEAT: Oracle posted better-than-expected results late Wednesday in its first quarterly report since co-founder Larry Ellison gave up the helm of the business software maker. The company reported that its software and cloud revenue grew 5 percent. The stock rose $3.39, or 8.3 percent, to $44.61.

(AP) — One-time billionaire Tim Blixseth is due in federal court Thursday to explain why he failed to comply with an order to pay $13.8 million to the creditors of an ultra-luxury Montana resort. Blixseth delayed potential court sanctions for months with an unsuccessful appeal to the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.

BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union leaders met Thursday to seek solutions to two major challenges — how to jumpstart sluggish economic growth at home, and how to deal long-term with Russia. The fund is supposed to leverage EU seed money and loan guarantees into up to 315 billion euros ($386 billion) of private-sector investment to upgrade infrastructure, create jobs and stimulate growth.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Abu Dhabi's national carrier, Etihad, has showcased the arrival of its first Airbus A380, outfitted with "the only three-room suite in the sky." The fast-growing Gulf carrier also showcased Thursday its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which will begin flying to Dusseldorf, Germany, on Feb. 1.
