Puerto Rico seeks high-end investors to help jumpstart economy

2 hours, 10 minutes ago

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico hopes to persuade wealthy investors to bet on the U.S. territory at a two-day conference aimed at attracting new money amid the island's struggles to recover from a nearly eight-year recession. Some 200 business executives, the majority from the U.S., are attending the summit, organized in part by Paulson's company and Puerto Rico's Department of Economic Development & Commerce. The summit is the first of its kind and seeks to highlight reasons why Puerto Rico would be a good place for investors, including a law that allows new residents to avoid taxes on capital gains, the main revenue source for many high-end investors.

OPAL, Wyo. (AP) — Residents and emergency crews were waiting for a fire to burn itself out after an explosion at a natural gas processing plant in a small town in southwestern Wyoming. Gas from the plant serves a huge number of customers across the West and as far east as Ohio, but the explosion came between the winter heating and summer cooling seasons, when demand is lower, officials said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A cooling-off period has been called in the fight between the makers of Sriracha hot sauce and the Southern California city that says its air is too spicy to bear. Arkansas Supreme Court won't reconsider judgment for pharmaceutical company in drug case

2 hours, 12 minutes ago

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Supreme Court on Thursday declined to reconsider its decision that threw out a $1.2 billion judgment against a pharmaceutical company accused of improperly marketing an antipsychotic drug. "The court's rejection of the state (Medicaid fraud) case does significant harm to the state and its citizens," McDaniel wrote in the filing. "It deprives the state of a critical tool to protect the integrity of the Arkansas Medicaid program and the vulnerable poor, sick and elderly who depend on Medicaid as a literal lifeline."
