RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A federal bankruptcy judge plans to approve the sale of West Virginia-based Patriot Coal's assets. A federal website says a hearing could be held in Richmond on Friday if parties in the case don't agree on language in the judge's confirmation order. Scott Depot, West Virginia-based Patriot says most of its operating assets will be sold to Lexington, Kentucky-based Blackhawk Mining LLC. The Virginia Conservation Legacy Fund plans to use Patriot's other mines and mining permits for purposes of water quality improvement and reclamation.

VW may compensate owners of diesels that cheat on pollution tests; says fix won't hurt mileage

DETROIT (AP) — Volkswagen could compensate owners of diesel-powered cars that emit high levels of pollutants, possibly by paying them for the lost value of their vehicles, the company's top U.S. executive said. "There might be a slight impact on performance," Horn said Thursday to a subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A U.S. bankruptcy judge has approved a $338 million settlement fund for victims of a fiery oil train derailment that claimed 47 lives in Quebec. The settlement, which is worth $446 million in Canadian dollars, was the product of negotiations with about two dozen companies. A runaway train with 72 oil tankers derailed on July 6, 2013, in Lac Megantic, Quebec, setting off powerful explosions and causing raging fires.
