Companies develop collars that monitor pets for pain, signs of disease and distress

LOS ANGELES (AP) — You can use wearables with GPS to keep track of wandering dogs. Others help you track animals' physical activity. PetPace, based in Burlington, Massachusetts, has a medical collar that can measure a dog's vital signs and other information to look for signs of pain. Irregularities trigger a notice by phone, text or email. Voyce, created by I4C Innovations Inc., and based in Chantilly, Virginia, has a consumer version that tracks similar information. It also has a Voyce Pro that is available to veterinarians to prescribe for pets recovering from surgery or long-term illness.

New measurement trims official elevation of Alaska's Denali, North America's tallest peak

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — North America's tallest mountain doesn't just have a new name. It also has a new elevation. The previous measurement of 20,320 feet stemmed from a 1953 survey that used the technology of the time, officials said. The new elevation is the result of data collected from the mountain by climbers in June using technology that didn't exist in the earlier survey, such as GPS instruments.

US factory orders edge up 0.4 percent in July as business investment shows strength

WASHINGTON (AP) — Orders to U.S. factories posted a modest gain in July, helped by the biggest rise in motor vehicles orders in a year and a solid gain in a category that tracks business investment plans. The modest increase in factory orders in July suggests that manufacturing is still grappling with a variety of challenges, from falling energy prices to a stronger dollar, which hurts exports.
