BONANZA, Nicaragua (AP) — Rescue workers and trapped miners alike frantically dug away at opposite sides of rock and mud that blocked a Nicaragua gold mine, finally succeeding in freeing at least 20 men. Efforts to reach five miners still missing continued Saturday. "The sadness of feeling yourself trapped in a whole is inmense but I never lost hope," said the 32-year-old miner said from a hospital bed in the town of Bonanza, near the El Comal gold and silver mine. "I kept thinking I was too young to die and above all, I thought about my two daughters."

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Downtown Los Angeles is ready for its inaugural outdoor music festival Saturday despite concerns from residents about possible security and traffic issues. NYC police union leader: Officers aren't responsible for death of drugged-out man in custody

NEW YORK (AP) — The head of a New York City police union says officers shouldn't be held responsible for the death of a drugged-out man in custody. Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch says drugs place the user's life in jeopardy — not police. His statement comes after the New York Police Department said it was being investigated following the July 13 death of Ronald Singleton. The 45-year-old was high on PCP when officers attempting to hospitalize him restrained him. The medical examiner's office says the restraint led to his death.
