(AP) — New York regulators have begun investigating short-term, high-interest loans secured by borrowers' homes or other real estate to determine if they violate state laws against predatory lending. Superintendent Ben Lawsky says such "loan to own" schemes are unconscionable. Regulators are investigating whether the companies intentionally set onerous terms with high interest rates, many upfront fees and big balloon payments.

House committee says safety agency should have found faulty GM ignition switches in 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) — The government's auto safety agency should have discovered General Motors' faulty ignition switches seven years before the company recalled 2.6 million cars to fix the deadly problem, a House committee majority charged Tuesday in a new report. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration misunderstood how vehicles worked, lacked accountability and failed to share information, according to the report, which was issued the same day that a Senate panel led by Democrats is scheduled to hold a hearing on the matter.

CHICAGO (AP) — Grain futures were lower Tuesday in early trading on the Chicago Board of Trade. Beef and pork lower on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Dec live cattle was 1.37 cents lower at $1.5765 pound; Oct feeder cattle was .88 cent lower at 2.2497 a pound; Dec lean hogs declined 1.05 cents to $.9480 a pound.

Trump Plaza shuts down, becomes 4th Atlantic City casino to close this year

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino closed its doors early Tuesday, the fourth Atlantic City casino to go belly-up so far this year. When it opened on May 14, 1984, Donald Trump called it the finest building in Atlantic City, and possibly the nation. But since then, The Donald has left town and cut ties to its casinos. And the Plaza, like many Atlantic City casinos, has seen better days.
