DeVry chairman to step down in November

The chairman of DeVry Inc., Harold Shapiro, will retire in November, at a time when the education company is struggling with shrinking U.S. enrollments. The Downers Grove, Ill., company said Monday a current director, Connie Curran, will become the new chair at the company's annual meeting on Nov. 6. A director since 2003, she has been a health care executive and consultant.

It's one thing to say tech geniuses don't need degrees. After all, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg all dropped out of college. Which raises the question: When is it OK for a wunderkind to drop out of school? Some folks in Silicon Valley and elsewhere say a conventional education can't possibly give kids with outsize talents what they need. Others, like Vivek Wadhwa, a fellow at Stanford Law School who teaches and advises startup companies, say dropping out to pursue a dream is like "buying a lottery ticket _ that's how good your odds are here. More likely than not, you will become unemployed. For every success, there are 100,000 failures."
Judge tosses ex-BP executive's obstruction charge

A federal judge has dismissed a charge that is the backbone of the case against a former BP executive accused of concealing information from Congress about the amount of oil spewing in 2010 from the company's blown-out well in the Gulf of Mexico. The charge of obstructing Congress thrown out Monday by U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt "was perhaps as much as 90 of the government's evidence," Weingarten said.

Berkshire owns Minneapolis-based Dairy Queen, so Buffett's always happy to talk about his favorite treats. Dairy Queen CEO John Gainor presented Buffett with a jersey labeling him the restaurant's No. 1 fan. Buffett also wore his Dairy Queen tie Monday.
