TOKYO (AP) — Japan's central bank expanded its asset purchases in a surprise move Friday to shore up sagging growth in the world's No. 3 economy. BOJ Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda said the increase was required to prevent a reversal into a "deflationary mindset" that the country's leaders contend has stymied growth for many years. Countering such a trend is "the most important thing we can do," Kuroda said. "Whatever we can do, we will."

The poor result released Friday was despite a 7 percent increase in quarterly sales to 1.9 trillion yen ($17.3 billion) as performance improved in cameras, TVs and game businesses.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Two Malaysian children sued Malaysia Airlines and the government on Friday over the loss of their father on Flight 370, the first lawsuit filed in the country by relatives of those aboard the jetliner that mysteriously disappeared eight months ago. The suit filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court alleges the airline was negligent and failed to take all due measures to ensure a safe flight. It also named the directors-general of civil aviation and immigration, the country's air force chief and the government as respondents and alleged they committed gross neglect and breach of duty.

Japan stock index soars 5 percent, yen falls after BOJ announces new stimulus

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Japan's stock index surged 5 percent to the highest level since late 2007 and the yen slid against the dollar Friday after the Bank of Japan unexpectedly announced new stimulus to boost a flagging economic recovery. The bank said it would increase its asset purchases by between 10 trillion yen and 20 trillion yen ($90.7 billion to $181.3 billion) to about 80 trillion yen ($725 billion) annually.
