HOUSTON (AP) — Oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. says the number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. declined by three this week to 885. Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Louisiana lost four rigs, West Virginia declined by three and Kansas, North Dakota and Ohio each lost one.

A year later, father of victim of Santa Barbara killings continues effort to change gun laws

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Richard Martinez thinks of his son every day, and with those thoughts come the constant reminder of a young life cut tragically short by another man with a gun. "I'm not anti-gun," Martinez is quick to say. "I'm anti-gun violence." Martinez had just gotten off the phone with his son, Christopher Michaels-Martinez, on the night of May 23, 2014, when the sophomore English major at the University of California, Santa Barbara, decided he would head to a nearby deli for something to eat. Within minutes, Michaels-Martinez would become one of six UCSB students killed by Elliot Rodger, an emotionally troubled 22-year-old toting three semi-automatic weapons and more than 400 rounds of ammunition.

Wal-Mart makes public guidelines to suppliers on animal treatment, use of antibiotics

NEW YORK (AP) — Wal-Mart's push to get its suppliers to give farm animals fewer antibiotics and more room to roam is expected to have a big impact on the food industry, experts say. Wal-Mart told The Associated Press that it's asking meat producers, eggs suppliers and others to use antibiotics only for disease prevention or treatment, not to fatten their animals, a common industry practice.

Toyota promises to help find cause of Takata airbag defects, says assuring safety is key

TOKYO (AP) — Toyota vowed to help pinpoint the cause of a defect in air bags used in more than 50 million vehicles worldwide, saying the auto industry risks losing the trust of car buyers if the problem drags on unresolved. "Recalls are not just about technical problems. If there is a morsel of consumer doubt, then we have to deal with it," Toyota President Akio Toyoda told reporters on the sidelines of a reception Thursday for the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association.
