US oil and natural gas rig count drops by 10 to 875; down 4 in Texas

HOUSTON (AP) — Oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. says the number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. declined by 10 this week to 875. Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas lost four rigs, California declined by three and Arkansas, Louisiana and Pennsylvania each dropped two. North Dakota was down one.

Company that got $3 million from Atlantic City but failed to make loans faces 2 court fights

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — The future of a company that was given $3 million by Atlantic City to run a loan program that has yet to make a loan is now being sorted out in two courts. An attorney for Atlantic City says he has received information through subpoenas that Drummon did not turn over. The company is also facing legal action in Tennessee where a bank alleges that the company Drummon purchased with the money from Atlantic City has defaulted on a loan.

American Express says President Ed Gilligan dies suddenly after falling ill on flight

NEW YORK (AP) — American Express said president Ed Gilligan died suddenly Friday after falling ill while flying on a corporate plane to New York. "This is deeply painful and frankly unimaginable for all of us who had the great fortune to work with Ed," said American Express CEO Ken Chenault, in a letter to employees Friday.

Prosecutor: Nevada man who killed unarmed trespasser was seeking out a deadly confrontation

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada prosecutor on Friday urged jurors to convict a 74-year-old man of first-degree murder, saying he was seeking out a deadly confrontation when he shot two unarmed trespassers in a vacant duplex he owns. A jury in Reno is expected to begin deliberations Friday afternoon after defense lawyer Theresa Ristenpart gives her closing statement.
