Japan to step up sanctions against Russia following Malaysian airliner disaster

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's top government spokesman said Monday that the country is stepping up sanctions against Russia over the unrest in Ukraine. Japan will disclose a list of individuals and groups subject to the sanctions after a Cabinet endorsement that could come as early as Tuesday, Suga said. The move follows the July 17 downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in eastern Ukraine. The U.S. and Ukraine accuse pro-Russia rebels of firing a missile that brought the plane down, killing all 298 people on board.

Tyson to sell Mexico, Brazil poultry operations for $575 million in cash

SPRINGDALE, Ark. (AP) — Tyson Foods says it will sell its poultry businesses in Mexico and Brazil for $575 million in cash to help pay debt tied to its acquisition of Hillshire Brands. The company expects the sale to JBS SA to be completed by the end of the year. JBS SA is the parent of JBS USA Holdings Inc., which owns Pilgrim's Pride.

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union's antitrust authority has cleared Apple's $3 billion deal to buy Beats Electronics, which makes headphones and offers music streaming services. The takeover of Beats Electronics and Beats Music announced in May for $2.6 billion in cash and $400 million in stock is the most expensive acquisition in Apple's 38-year history.

Samsung postpones release of Tizen smartphone in Russia as it seeks to improve ecosystem

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Samsung Electronics Co. said Monday it is delaying sales of its first Tizen-powered smartphone in the latest setback to the company's ambition to create a mobile platform to rival Google's Android or Apple's iOS. In a brief statement, Samsung said the postponement is to further enhance the Tizen "ecosystem," which encompasses developers, consumers and devices using the mobile OS.
