JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel "soon" will open an office focused on renewable energy in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates — even though the two nations have no diplomatic relations, an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman said Friday. Where that office space will be in the capital remains up in the air, the Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency said, though it confirmed Israel has the right under its charter as a member to work there.

US stocks open mostly lower in abbreviated post-holiday trading day; energy shares fall

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are opening mostly lower, led by declines in energy stocks as the price of oil turns lower. Consol Energy sank 4 percent in early trading Friday. The Dow Jones industrial average edged down 17 points, or 0.1 percent, to 17,795 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was little changed at 2,089. The Nasdaq composite inched up six points, or 0.1 percent, to 5,122.

Swiss court convicts in absentia ex-HSBC employee for leaking bank data, sets 5-year sentence

GENEVA (AP) — A Swiss court has convicted in absentia a former employee with international bank HSBC for economic espionage and sentenced him to five years in prison. France does not extradite its own citizens and Falciani appears unlikely to serve the sentence. Falciani was on trial for leaking bank data that led to a worldwide wave of tax evasion probes against prominent clients in France and elsewhere.
