Canadian prime minister denies country is in recession amid election campaign

TORONTO (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister and election candidate Stephen Harper is declining to say the country is in recession despite new data that shows that it is. Harper refused to call it that, saying "we've had a few weak months" but the economy is bouncing back. He pointed to growth in June.

Survey: Growth in US manufacturing drops again in August, slips to lowest level since May 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — A strong dollar and China's economic slowdown dragged growth at U.S. factories to the lowest level since May 2013. Growth fell in production, employment and exports. Raw materials prices dropped for the 10th straight month. The index from a trade group of purchasing managers is down from 58.1 last August.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) — An athletic building under construction at a private university collapsed Tuesday, injuring six construction workers and leaving crumpled steel strewn across the site. North Smithfield Fire Chief Robert Seltzer said the men were in various locations — on top of the structure, inside or working in cranes to move steel around — when the steel collapsed.

US appeals court revives dispute over climate impacts from federal energy leases

(AP) — A federal appeals court ruling has revived a bid by environmentalists to block drilling on public lands in Montana until the government looks more closely at climate change impacts. But a three-judge panel from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed in a Monday ruling that sends the case back to U.S. District Judge Sam Haddon.
