5 takeaways from a summer box office lacking punch

NEW YORK (AP) — The movie of the summer might have been Marvel's irreverent hit "Guardians of the Galaxy," the top domestic film at the box office. Or it could have been Michael Bay's sequel-reboot hybrid "Transformers: Age of Extinction," the lone movie to even approach $1 billion globally. The rabid interest for "Star Wars" is good news for Hollywood's 2015. No so much for its 2014.

A Labor Day conundrum: Why are so few of America's construction jobs held by women?

NEW YORK (AP) — Janice Moreno graduated from college with a degree in English literature, but never landed a job paying more than $12 an hour. Now, at 36, she's back in the classroom — in safety glasses and a T-shirt — learning how to be a carpenter. If Moreno's six-week training program in New York City leads to a full-time job, she'll have bucked long odds. On this Labor Day weekend, ponder the latest federal data: About 7.1 million Americans were employed in construction-related occupations last year — and only 2.6 percent were women.

Ohio, Hawaii Army National Guards postponing training drills, citing national budget shortfall

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Ohio Army National Guard is postponing most of its planned training in early September because of federal budget issues. She said guards across the country are facing cutbacks because of a federal budget shortfall. The Army National Guards of Hawaii and Guam also said Friday they are postponing upcoming drills.
