2:40 p.m. (1340 GMT, 9:40 a.m. EDT) An American who lost relatives in the EgyptAir disaster has reached out to Germanwings families to give them support. Jim Brokaw founded the Families of EgyptAir 990 as a support group after losing his father and stepmother in the 1999 crash, caused by a co-pilot who is believed to have intentionally flown the jet into the ocean.

US stock market opens higher, breaking a 4-day slump; price of oil falls

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are opening modestly higher after four losing days. Cruise operator Carnival jumped 6 percent in early trading Friday after reporting income that was far higher than Wall Street analysts were expecting. The Dow Jones industrial average rose seven points, or 0.1 percent, to 17,685 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time.

BMW recalls nearly 49,000 motorcycles; rear wheel flange can crack and wheels can come loose

DETROIT (AP) — BMW is recalling nearly 49,000 motorcycles in the U.S. and Canada because flanges that hold the rear wheel can crack if bolts are too tight. BMW says if bolts that hold the rear wheels to a flange are over-tightened, the flange can crack. If that happens, the bolts can loosen and the wheel may not stay secured to the bike.

Co-pilot may have hidden illness, torn up sick notes for day of plane crash, prosecutors say

MONTABAUR, Germany (AP) — Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz appears to have hidden evidence of an illness from his employers, including having been excused by a doctor from work the day he crashed a passenger plane into a mountain, prosecutors said Friday. Prosecutors didn't say what type of illness — mental or physical — Lubitz may have been suffering from.
