WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate moved forward Tuesday on a sweeping, $612 billion defense policy bill despite a presidential veto threat stemming from larger budget disputes that have hamstrung Washington. The Obama administration has pressed Congress to add money for defense and domestic agencies above the limits imposed by the 2011 budget deal. The administration is threatening to veto the defense bill over how Congress added money — for the military only.

General Assembly says it will be up to member states to decide whether to create more transparent vetting and disclosure requirements for the world body.

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stock indexes were mixed in afternoon trading Tuesday, taking a pause after five straight days of gains. DuPont soared on news that its embattled CEO will retire, while biotechnology companies sank again. Energy stocks climbed as the price of crude oil rose sharply. DUPONT: The chemical giant DuPont rose $4.24, or 8 percent, to $55.50, the biggest gainer in the Dow average and the S&P 500. DuPont's CEO Ellen Kullman said she would retire next week. DuPont's profits have lagged in recent years and the company has been a target of activist investors like Nelsen Peltz.

Wheat, corn, oats, soybeans higher on the CBOT; beef and pork higher on the CME.

CHICAGO (AP) — Grain futures were higher Tuesday on the Chicago Board of Trade. Beef and pork were higher on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. December live cattle was up 3 cents to $1.3322 a pound; November feeder cattle gained 4.50 cents to $1.7802 a pound; while December lean hogs rose 2 cents to $.6672 a pound.
