Nevada jobless rate unchanged in March; remains 8.5 percent

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada's jobless rate held steady in March at 8.5 percent, the same as the month before, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported Friday. The state saw a seasonally adjusted gain of 4,700 jobs in March, as private employers added 5,100 jobs while 400 were cut from the public sector.

Cable channel WGN America calls on 'Salem' witches to launch move toward original programming

LOS ANGELES (AP) — WGN America is calling on witchcraft to help launch the cable channel in a new direction. Starting this weekend, WGN America is adding its first original series to its schedule of Chicago sports and acquired programming such as broadcast network reruns. The groundbreaker is "Salem," set in the Massachusetts town during its 17th-century witch obsession and with an "epic romance" at its center, according to the channel. The drama, debuting at 10 p.m. EDT Sunday, features Janet Montgomery, Shane West, Seth Gabel and Ashley Madekwe in its cast.

Prosecution: 3 ex-players formed Austria criminal organization to fix 18 league matches

GRAZ, Austria (AP) — In the biggest match-fixing scandal in Austrian soccer, three former players are accused of attempting to manipulate 18 national league games from 2004 to 2013 with bets of up to $415,000 a match. Three of the 18 matches were played this season. All first-division games under suspicion include either Kapfenberg or Groedig, both former clubs of Taboga.

US senator: Metro-North hit with $552,000 in safety violation fines over past decade

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Metro-North, the nation's second-largest commuter railroad, has been fined $552,000 over the past decade for safety violations and defects, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said Friday. Defects and violations are commonly found during inspections and audits, a spokesman for the Federal Railroad Administration said, and Metro-North said it has been implementing significant measures to improve safety. The railroad had two derailments last year, one in New York City that left four passengers dead and one in Bridgeport that injured dozens. It carried more than 83.4 million riders between New York City and its suburbs last year.
