Calm on Wall Street: A turbulent week ends on a placid note, but has the storm passed?

Well, that was exciting. Days after China threw the biggest scare into Wall Street in years, U.S. stocks have come surging back and ended the week Friday on a placid note that suggested the worst may be over for now. Even so, investors are buckling their seat belts for more turbulence ahead. The Dow Jones industrial average fell a scant 11.76 points Friday, or 0.1 percent, to 16,643.01, capping a week that saw stomach-churning losses and gains of around 600 points per day. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.21 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,988.87. The Nasdaq composite added 15.62 points, or 0.3 percent, to 4,828.32.

Experts: GOP candidates' tough talk doesn't always square with facts of US-China relationship

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — If there was ever a week for the Republican presidential candidates to talk tough on China, this was it: Spurred by the stock market's wild ride, they lashed out at the world's most populous nation. It's rhetoric that doesn't always square with the realities of the relationship between the world's two largest economies, said experts on America's ties with China, even if it does make for nifty campaign sound bites.

South Dakota officials, businesses say 2015 shaping up to be strong year for tourism in state

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota tourism industry is surging this year, spurred on by good weather, low gas prices and landmark events such as the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, officials say. At the end of July, there were nearly $350 million in tourism taxable sales, which is more than 14 percent higher than the same period last year, according to information provided by the state Tourism Department. That translates to a jump of nearly 17 percent for the state tourism tax from the same time last year.

Experts: GOP candidates' tough talk doesn't always square with facts of US-China relationship

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — If there was ever a week for the Republican presidential candidates to promise to get tough on China, this was it: Spurred by the stock market's wild ride, they lashed out at the world's most populous nation. But some experts say that rhetoric doesn't square with the realities of the relationship between the world's two largest economies — even if it makes for nifty campaign sound bites.
