BankFinancial posts profit of $34.7 million in fourth quarter

BURR RIDGE, Ill. (AP) _ BankFinancial Corp. (BFIN) on Friday reported fourth-quarter profit of $34.7 million. The Burr Ridge, Illinois-based company said it had profit of $1.72 per share. The bank holding company posted revenue of $13.5 million in the period. For the year, the company reported profit of $40.6 million, or $2.01 per share. Revenue was reported as $53 million.

The U.S. stock market capped a rough month Friday, delivering its third loss in five days and extending its declines for the year. On Friday, investors also weighed the consequences of a slowdown in U.S. economic growth and how further strength in the dollar could dent corporate profits. "The real issue still is the confusion, the uncertainty around the speed of decline in oil prices and what that means, and the rise in the dollar and what that means for earnings," said Bob Doll, chief equity strategist at Nuveen Asset Management.

Justice Department to provide memo on surveillance after suit from privacy group

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department has agreed to turn over a legal opinion regarding government surveillance and census data after a years-long court fight with a privacy group. That group in 2011 sued to obtain documents about government surveillance under the Patriot Act. Among the records it sought was an opinion that analyzed law enforcement access to census data under a section of the Patriot Act that the National Security Agency relied on to collect bulk phone records.

New York state wage board recommends $7.50 hourly wage for servers, other tipped workers

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Restaurant servers and other tipped workers in New York state would make $7.50 an hour before tips under a proposal recommended by a state wage board Friday "For far too long, wages for tipped workers in New York State have been too low," Cuomo said in a statement. "Today the Wage Board has recommended a course that begins to rectify that."
